They create and shape us when we are little and bigger children - beings who are the most vulnerable and defenceless against messages from parents, grandparents, caregivers in kindergarten and school. Words give us an identity, with words we are clothed either with power and self-esteem or with social expectations that stem from fear, immobilising. Words create patterns of thought and action with which each of us unconsciously goes through life. Such words are like incantations. They can take away the voice, because "children and fish have no voice". They can freeze emotions, because "boys don't cry". They can obscure needs - 'don't make trouble'. They can take away the courage to express ourselves when we keep hearing "don't freak out". They can dormant the life in us for years to come. Fortunately, in the face of these cuss words, we are not defenceless. Once we become aware of which fateful phrase is controlling us, we can shake it off by referring to other, healing words; we can create a new reality for ourselves and become fully ourselves.
